Mullens – Tams Mountain 138 kV Line Relocation

Location: Raleigh County, WV
Client: American Electric Power

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the access road construction, erosion and sediment control and restoration for the project.
  • Construction of 5.7 miles of access road through very steep mountainous terrain
  • Installation of 10′ x 40′ temporary bridge over stream to allow access to line crews
  • Complete restoration of site to include final erosion control, erosion matting and rock check dams, seeding and mulching.

Saltville – Kingsport 138 kV Line Reconstruction

Location: Washington County, VA
Client: American Electric Power

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the access road construction, erosion and sediment control and restoration for the project.
  • Construction/upgrade of 5 miles of access roads to include placement of over 7,000 tons of aggregate on roadway to allow access to line construction crews.
  • Installation of 10′ x 20′ temporary bridge to allow access to land owners impacted by project.
  • Complete restoration of site to include final erosion control, erosion matting and rock check dams, seeding and mulching.

Broadford – Richlands 138 kV Line Reconstruction

Location: Smyth County, VA
Client: American Electric Power

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the access road construction, erosion and sediment control and restoration for the project.
  • Project was located in very remote location, 10 miles off of paved road, requiring close coordination to allow delivery of construction equipment and materials.
  • Clearing of 18 acres of heavily-wooded, steep terrain.
  • Construction of 6.5 miles of access roads to include placement of over 10,000 tons of aggregate on roadway to allow access to line construction crews. Construction of roadway required significant movement of soils to construct level roadway across slope. Removal of rock was also required in many areas.
  • Access road was constructed within Clinch Mountain Wildlife Area, and was subject to standards of/inspection by Virginia Department of Game and Fish Personnel
  • Complete restoration of site to include final erosion control, erosion matting and rock check dams, seeding and mulching.

AEP Thorofare Creek Substation Grading/Site Development and Access Road Construction

Location: Kanawha County, WV
Client: American Electric Power

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the grading operations to prepare the substation pad, in addition to access road construction, erosion and sediment control and restoration for the project.
  • Construction of nearly 2 miles of access roads to include placement of over 1,000 tons of aggregate on roadway to allow access to line construction crews.
  • Demolition of large concrete foundations to allow preparation of station pad.
  • Complete restoration of site to include final erosion control, erosion matting and rock check dams, seeding and mulching.

71st Street Substation Grading/Site Development

Location: Broken Arrow, OK
Client: American Electric Power

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the grading and embankment operations to prepare the substation pad.
  • Installation of reinforced concrete entrance drive pavements
  • Supply and installation of water main and hydrant to service substation location.
  • Complete restoration of site to include final erosion control, erosion matting and rip rap slope protection, rock check dams, seeding and mulching.
  • Project was completed in a residential area requiring close attention to noise, dust and traffic issues.

East Sparta – Malvern 69kV Line Reconstruction

Location: Stark, Tuscarawas, Carroll Counties, OH

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the clearing/grubbing, access road construction, erosion and sediment control and restoration for this 10-mile project.
  • Installation of all erosion controls to include stabilized construction entrances and silt fencing.
  • Kwest Group personnel performed the weekly and post-rain event soil erosion inspections for the project.
  • Complete restoration of site to include final erosion control, erosion matting and rock check dams, seeding and mulching.

Mount Vernon – South Granville 69kV Transmission Line – Soil Erosion/Storm Water Pollution Prevention and Access Construction

Location: Licking and Knox Counties, OH

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the clearing/grubbing, access construction, erosion and sediment control and restoration for this 22.6 mile project.
  • Installation of all erosion controls to include stabilized construction entrances and compost fiber rolls.
  • Installation of wetland timber matting to allow access to sensitive ecological areas.
  • Kwest Group personnel performed the weekly and post-rain event soil erosion inspections for the project.
  • Project includes complete restoration of site to include final erosion control, erosion matting and rock check dams, seeding and mulching.

Cole Road Storage and Laydown Yard

Location: Franklin County, OH
Client: American Electric Power

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the clearing/grubbing, access construction, erosion and sediment control and construction of a 10 acre aggregate laydown yard to support material storage for an upcoming transmission line construction project.
  • Installation of all erosion controls to include stabilized construction entrances and compost fiber rolls.
  • Supply and installation of 18,000 tons of granular embankment/aggregate material
  • Kwest Group Personnel responsible for weekly and post-rain event sil erosion inspections for the project.

Arrowhead Substation Construction

Location: Abingdon, VA
Client: American Electric Power/Appalachian Electric Power

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the required grading, erosion control and water main relocation for this project located in southwest Virginia.
  • The project involved the on-site balance of earthen material as well as the import of additional embankment material. Rock was removed to achieve design subgrade elevations.
  • Project scope included construction of entrance road and guardrail.
  • Kwest Group crews also installed/relocated 12″ and 24″ ductile iron pipe water main to the adjacent Washington County Water Treatment Plant.
  • A temporary drainage swale and storm water detention basin was installed by Kwest Group to divert storm runoff around the disturbed areas of the site. Silt fencing was installed and maintained for the duration of the project by Kwest Group.
  • Seeding and final restoration was also completed by Kwest Group Personnel.

Uvalde Substation Expansion – Grading and Site Improvements

Location: Uvalde, Texas
Client: American Electric Power/Electric Transmission Texas

Project Description

  • Kwest Group performed the required erosion control, utility installation, grading and seeding for this project located in southwest Texas.
  • The project involved the on-site balance of earthen material to expand the existing substation pad and laydown yard and improve the access road.
  • Project scope included construction of a modular block retaining wall, asphalt pavement and permanent fence.
  • Kwest Group crews also installed 12″, 18″ and 24″ storm sewer through an existing live substation. To accomplish the utility work in this area hydro-excavation methods and extra safety precautions were implemented.
  • Waterline removal, repair and installations were also completed for this project.

Lakeview Substation Construction

Location: Cross Lanes, WV
Client: American Electric Power/Appalachian Electric Power

Project Description

  • The project involves the site development and erosion control activities required for the construction of a new substation pad.
  • Located on the side of a large slope, the project requires the installation of a reinforced embankment which is 36 feet in vertical height at the outside limits.
  • Geogrid is placed at 1′ vertical intervals for the full width of the reinforced area, which measures nearly 300 feet in length.
  • The 1′ horizontal to 1′ vertical slope was stabilized using a vegetative slope face reinforcement utilizing Enkamat 7020 with Flexterra FGM hydraulic infill.

Eichelberger 1H Well (Drill Pad & Access Road Construction)

Location: Ashland County, OH
Client: Devon Energy

Project Description

  • Kwest Group completed a 2 acre gas drill pad along with 1800 LF of new access road.
  • The project consisted of clearing & grubbing, erosion control, drainage installation, earthwork and aggregate placement.
  • Pad was constructed during the wettest December in recent history in the region and surpassed all expectations of the owner and contractors operating on the pad.
  • Due to the damp weather, and poor soil conditions, Kwest developed a value engineering alternative to use an ultra high strength geotextile fabric on top of the finished subgrade along with a thickened coarse aggregate layer to build a stable pad in subpar conditions.
  • This project was completed within strict schedule constraints to allow seamless flow of work for drilling crews.
  • Following the completion of the pad there were no maintenance issues or problems recorded.

Richman Farms 1H Well (Drill Pad & Access Road Construction)

Location: Medina County, OH
Client: Devon Energy

Project Description

  • Kwest Group completed this gas drill pad with access roads under challenging weather conditions and sub par soil.
  • The pad consisted of a cut to fill of 20,000 CY off a hill side and building a 300′ x 300′ pad. The excavated material was a glacial till material consisting of primarily very damp silt and sand.
  • We managed to move the material to grade in only 8 working days and were able to successfully stabilize the pad by using high strength geotextile fabric and a thicker stone base.
  • Kwest Group completed this gas drilling pad with access roads under challenging weather conditions and sub par soil.

Norfolk Southern Alternator Building and Diesel Shop Extension—Bellevue, OH Yard

Location: Norfolk Southern Yard – Bellevue, OH
Client: Norfolk Southern (Subcontract with Walsh Group)

Project Description

  • Demolition and site construction for new Alternator Building and Diesel Shop Extension.
  • Existing asphalt and concrete pavements were demolished to allow construction of improvements.
  • Construction of 8″ ductile iron pipe waterline with casing pipe and 2″ force main sewer, installed under existing rail beds.
  • Site drainage including 8″, 10″ & 18″ drainage along with associated structures
  • Site preparation and earthwork for new track spur
  • Installation of aggregate base for proposed parking lot and roadway
  • All Kwest Group Employees received FRA Railroad Workplace Safety Training for work within Bellevue Yard. Kwest Group Safety Director has obtained “Trainer’s Card” to provide this training to employees on future projects.
  • Project was competed ahead of schedule.
